Can a social worker help me find my biological dad?

I'm 17 and have finally decided that I think I'm ready to find my biological dad, we've never met but he knows I exsist, he just hasn't bothered to make contact..all I know information wise about him is his name and his original birthplace. Was just wondering if I could go to the social work department and get a social worker to help me find him, I'm finding this process so far very stressful and extremely emotional, I would just appreciate a little helping hand and some support..
